Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco 2023 is pure Nebbiolo from one of Barolo's great historic houses, blended from Vietti's vineyards in Barolo and Barbaresco. It was rated 93 POINTS by Jamie Goode, who called it "very stylish". Expect crushed red berries, mint and orange peel.
In the glass it shows raspberry, tea rose and white pepper, with a fresh, chalky edge.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous describes Vietti's Langhe Nebbiolo as very much a mini-Barbaresco. It's a good weekend wine, and a great match for agnolotti del plin, the little Piedmontese meat-filled pasta parcels.
The 2023 is the first Perbacco to include fruit from a newly acquired parcel in the lower part of the Ravera vineyard.
What it tastes like
This wine has sour cherry and wild berries on the nose, with dried thyme, a touch of tar and black tea underneath.
The palate is pure and focused, with ripe fruit kept fresh by lively acidity. The tannins have a little grip but stay round and polished. The finish shows Mediterranean herbs.
It's a lovely, precise Nebbiolo that drinks well now.
Style at a glance
- Body: Medium
- Sweetness: Dry
- Acidity: Fresh
- Tannin: Fine with gentle grip
- Oak: Barriques and large casks, which add subtle spice and leave the fruit in front
- Style: Fragrant, juicy, precise Nebbiolo
Food to enjoy this with
- Agnolotti del plin with butter and sage
- Roast pork loin with fennel and garlic
- Mushroom and fontina pizza
- Grilled quail or roast guinea fowl
- Medium-aged cheeses such as toma or young pecorino
- Something unexpected: Chinese char siu pork. The sweet, smoky glaze works with the wine's red fruit and fresh acidity.
Who makes it
Carlo Vietti founded the estate in the late 1800s in the hilltop village of Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo. His son Mario turned it into a quality winery from 1917. From the late 1950s, Luciana Vietti and her husband Alfredo Currado shaped its modern reputation. In 1961 Alfredo made Rocche di Castiglione, one of the first single-vineyard Barolos.
Vietti began its famous artist labels in 1974. Since 2016 it has been owned by the Krause family, who have added vineyards in Barolo and Barbaresco. Vietti now farms 75 hectares across some of the region's best sites.
Perbacco is mostly made from Nebbiolo grown in Vietti's Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards. Each vineyard is fermented and aged separately. Fermentation runs for 3 to 4 weeks at 28 to 32°C, and the wine matures in barriques and large casks before the final blend is made in steel.
Vietti also makes a classic Barolo from its top sites.
