Hans Herzog Estate
Meticulous attention to every detail, and the dedication of owners Hans and Therese Herzog, is why Hans Herzog Estate is widely acclaimed as one of the best wineries in New Zealand.
Hans, with a degree in viticulture and a masters degree in winemaking, has over 40 years as winegrower/winemaker experience. He is a true Vigneron, with sole control of his estate from the vineyard to wine making.
Therese's passion for hospitality has created a world-class tasting room experience and the iconic bistro and gourmet restaurant are both regarded as must-visit destinations for food and wine lovers across the world.
In 1994, having identified a unique piece of land bordering the banks of Marlborough's Wairau River, Hans planted Pinot Gris, Viognier and Montepulciano. Those varieties were rarely seen in New Zealand at the time, which now makes them some of the oldest vines in the region. Today the 11.5 hectare vineyard is densely planted and a complex patchwork of 26 different grape varieties. Hans Herzog produces some of New Zealand's most treasured organic wines, adhering to both organic and bio-dynamic principles with Han’s following a non-interventional philosophy. All grapes are handpicked and the uncompromising dedication for tending to his vines results in extremely low yields and wines layered with texture, complexity and purity.
In the winery, old-world methods and experience go hand in hand with modern technology. The wines undergo long cool fermentation processes with wild yeasts. The wines not only reflect the terroir where they are grown, but Hans himself. This is 100% natural winemaking, there are no chemicals, additives or concentration.
