Who makes it
Takapoto Estate is based on the shores of Lake Karapiro, near Cambridge in the Waikato, where founder Andy Anderson planted the home vineyard. Anderson's Pinot Noir won trophies at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, building the estate's reputation before his passing in 2019.
Alongside its Waikato home vineyard, Takapoto Estate sources fruit from further afield to broaden its range, including this Reserve Chardonnay, made from fruit grown on Gimblett Road in Hawke's Bay. Winemaker Alex Coldicutt oversees production.
About the vintage
Hawke's Bay's 2024 growing season followed the disruption of Cyclone Gabrielle the year before, with flowering hit by unsettled weather and yields running low across the region. December through to March then turned excellent, with warm, settled conditions that let the fruit ripen fully.
As Hawke's Bay winemaker Ollie Powrie put it, 2024 turned into "one of the best vintages" the region has seen in some time.
