This vintage blends traditional character with modern refinement from Poderi Aldo Conterno, showcasing the depth that old-vine Barbera can achieve when grown on premier Barolo terroir. Conca Tre Pile is Poderi Aldo Conterno's Barbera d'Alba, grown in Bussia, in the hills of Monforte d'Alba. Expect a full-bodied red with citrus, red cherry and spice, backed by fine tannins from a year in new French oak. It was rated 94 POINTS by James Suckling.
In the glass it shows red cherry and redcurrant fruit alongside cinnamon, liquorice and a faint hint of smoke and graphite, with Barbera's trademark bright acidity carried by a firm, structured palate.
This wine would pair well with rich pasta dishes or grilled red meat, and it's a good introduction to what Barbera can do when it's planted on serious Nebbiolo ground rather than treated as an everyday drink.
What it tastes like
The palate is full-bodied and structured, with velvety tannins and the crisp, precise acidity Barbera is known for, carrying through to a warm, chocolatey finish. It's a serious take on the variety.

Who makes it
Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the benchmark names of Monforte d'Alba, best known for its single-vineyard Barolo.
Conca Tre Pile comes from Barbera vines up to 45 years old, planted on the steep, hillside terrain of Bussia Soprana, ground that more typically produces the estate's great Barolo.
For the 2022 vintage, the grapes were hand-picked in early October, then macerated on skins for 8 to 10 days in stainless steel at 26 to 28 degrees before the wine was moved into 100% new French barriques for 12 months.
About the vintage
The 2022 growing season in Piedmont was hot and dry from the start, with heavy drought and relentless summer heat that pushed vines hard across the region.
Decanter rated it an uneven vintage overall, variable even in the usually reliable Bussia cru, but named Poderi Aldo Conterno among the estates whose wines still delivered through the difficult conditions.
