With a focus on bringing the best of New Zealand wine to one location, The Winery's reputation grew and in 2019 we were recognised by TripAdvisor in the World's Top 10 wine experiences People's Choice Awards.

In February 2020 The Winery opened a second store in Arrowtown, taking the experience to the next level with more whisky and gin tastings, our famous cheeseboards with a new tapas menu and a decor designed for the relaxation and comfort of our customers. Peregrine Rosé 2026 is a dry, organic Pinot Noir rosé from Central Otago, with cherry blossom, watermelon and pretty red berry fruit. It was rated 93 POINTS by Cameron Douglas MS, and Peregrine call it "a gorgeous summer wine". A lovely wine for anyone who likes crisp, fragrant rosé.

In the glass it shows a blush pink colour and a delicate perfume with a faint hint of Turkish delight. It is elegant and beautifully balanced, finishing clean and refreshing.

This is a wine for those of us who enjoy a delicate, pretty rosé on a warm afternoon. It would pair well with light salads and seafood, and it is a fantastic weekend wine for the summer ahead.

Peregrine's landmark winery in Gibbston, completed in 2003, was designed to evoke the rotation of a falcon's wing in flight.

What it tastes like

The wine has finely tuned fruit tannins and a rush of fresh acidity, which Cameron Douglas, MS found mouth-watering, with fresh red cherry, strawberry, rose and a twist of citrus. He also noted a light mineral quality and a soft saline touch that add to its complexity. It's delicious.

Style at a glance

  • Body: light and elegant
  • Sweetness: dry (3 g/L residual sugar)
  • Acidity: fresh and mouth-watering
  • Oak: none; fermented in stainless steel to keep it fresh and fruity
  • Style: fragrant, dry, delicate, organic

Food to enjoy this with

  • Grilled prawns with chilli and lime
  • Salmon sashimi or a salmon poke bowl
  • Salade Niçoise
  • Charcuterie and soft cheeses
  • Goat cheese, beetroot and rocket salad
  • Something unexpected: a watermelon, feta and mint salad. The wine's own watermelon note picks up the fruit, and its fresh acidity balances the salty feta.

Who makes it

Peregrine is owned by the McLachlan family, who have taken a hands-on approach to winemaking since 1998. Estate owner Lindsay McLachlan is involved at every stage, from growing the organic fruit to selling the wine, and Fraser McLachlan, who joined the business in 2012, is now CEO. Peregrine has also worked with the Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust, the Department of Conservation and the Fiordland Conservation Trust to protect some of New Zealand's rarest native birds.

Most of the fruit for this rosé comes from Pisa, where a warm, steady climate and light, stony soils give a long summer for balanced ripening, with the rest from Peregrine's estate vineyards in Bendigo, the hottest and driest of their sub-regions. The vineyards are farmed organically, with no synthetic fertilisers and compost made on the estate.

Winemaker Nadine Cross has led the winemaking at Peregrine since 2010, after vintages in France, California and Marlborough. For the 2026 vintage, the rosé is 100% Pinot Noir, 81% from Pisa and 19% from Peregrine Estate Bendigo. The grapes were hand-picked early to keep freshness, given a 3-hour press with minimal skin contact for its pale colour, and fermented cool at 13–14°C in stainless steel tanks.

About the vintage

Peregrine describe 2026 as a cooler than average growing season, with a slow, extended ripening period. A mild autumn brought warmer days and cool nights, so the flavours developed gradually while keeping their freshness and acidity, and a later than usual harvest gave concentrated, expressive fruit.
