Mount Edward's Grüner Veltliner 2025 comes off a tiny half-hectare block on the certified-organic Morrison Vineyard in Central Otago. It's dry and lithe, floral and peppery, with pear and a mineral edge carried by fresh acidity. Good with spicy food now, or worth a year or two in the cellar.
Grüner Veltliner is still rare in Central Otago, where Pinot Noir dominates almost every hillside. Mount Edward planted theirs on the Morrison Vineyard between 2012 and 2014, alongside a hectare of Riesling, so the whole planting is barely half a hectare.
This is an aromatic, spice-driven white from a producer well known for Pinot Noir, made without fining or filtration in the same minimal-intervention style Mount Edward applies across its whole range. This is a great food wine, reach for it with Asian takeaway on a Friday night, or open it as an aperitif before something richer.
Most Central Otago white wine is Pinot Gris or Riesling. Grüner is a different proposition again: it trades tropical or honeyed fruit for white pepper and pip fruit, and finishes drier and more savoury than either. Mount Edward has been farming the Morrison Vineyard organically since it was first planted in 1997, and that same Bio Gro-certified regime now covers this younger block of Grüner too.
What it tastes like
The nose leads with white pepper and dried flowers, then pip fruit sits underneath. On the palate it's medium weight with a lithe, almost silky texture: pear and spice again, backed by a chalky mineral note, and it finishes dry and refreshing rather than broad. The acidity is what carries it - bright without being sharp - and it's built to go with food rather than stand alone.
Style at a glance
- Body: Light to medium
- Sweetness: Dry
- Acidity: Fresh and prominent
- Style: Organic, single-vineyard, aromatic, savoury, food-friendly
Food
Wiener schnitzel with a squeeze of lemon, chargrilled asparagus, a Vietnamese pork and noodle salad, sushi and sashimi, roast chicken with tarragon, or a plate of soft goat's cheese. The white pepper character also makes it a good match for mildly spiced Thai food - most aromatic whites turn sweet or flabby next to chilli, but Grüner's dryness and pepper note just carries on through it.
Who makes it
Mount Edward was established in 1997 as one of Central Otago's pioneer wineries, starting out making a single wine and growing since into a family-run operation across five estate vineyards. Every hectare is farmed organically under Bio Gro certification, and the winemaking follows the same rule throughout: no fining, no filtration, no additives beyond what the fruit itself provides.
About the vintage
Central Otago's 2025 growing season was unusually even. Scout Wines winemaker Sarah Adamson described the heat summation for the year as surfing the average line from start to finish, with no real hot or cold spells to push it off course. A frost during flowering in early November put some pressure on yields, but the fine weather that followed gave the vines a good fruit set regardless.
Harvest ran at a deliberate pace in the cooler conditions. Felton Road's Blair Walter described yields across the region as pleasingly similar to 2023 and 2024, only marginally down because of that November frost. Quartz Reef's Rudi Bauer pointed to the season's biggest upside: grapes coming in with very good acidity, which bodes well for how these wines will age. That's particularly good news for a variety like Grüner Veltliner, which depends on a firm acid line to carry its pepper and spice character - 2025 looks like a strong year for it.
When to drink it
Mount Edward says it's drinking extremely well now, and will cellar with confidence for two to four years. It isn't built for the long haul the way some of the region's Rieslings are, so there's no reason to hold it back if you feel like opening it tonight.
