The Louis Jadot Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 2023 is a highly regarded elegant premium white Burgundy known for its balance of rich tropical fruit notes and chalky minerality. It comes from old Chardonnay vines in the walled Clos de la Garenne vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune, and is made by Louis Jadot. It shows floral notes and candied citrus, with a rich, ripe palate and a very long finish.

In the glass it shows a tightly wound, concentrated palate.

Who makes it

Louis Jadot farms 154 hectares across the Côte d'Or, the Mâconnais and Beaujolais.

Clos de la Garenne is a small walled vineyard in the Champ Canet area of Puligny-Montrachet, above Clos de la Mouchère. Louis Jadot sources fruit from the vines of Domaine Duc de Magenta, in a long-standing arrangement with the Magenta family. 

The grapes are lightly crushed and fermented in oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, and some of the barrels are new. The wine goes through partial malolactic fermentation, which softens the acidity.

About the vintage

Charles Curtis MW reported in Decanter that the Côte de Beaune had far less rain than the Côte de Nuits in 2023, and that a heatwave arrived late in the season. Picking began in the first week of September, and he rated the whites 4 out of 5, with the approachability of 2017 and some of the concentration of 2022.

James Suckling and Stuart Pigott described a large crop of around 35 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, and whites that emphasise freshness and drinkability.
