Domaine Charvin's Côtes du Rhône 2024 comes from organically farmed old vines just north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape boundary, made by the same family with the same care as their celebrated Châteauneuf. Grenache-led, with red fruit, dried herbs and a silky, elegant texture, it drinks beautifully. A serious, honest Rhône red at an everyday price.
Domaine Charvin's vines sit right on the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on ground that fell just outside the appellation line when it was drawn in the 1930s. Same soil, same old vines, same family - just a different label, and any everyday wine price.
The Charvin family has farmed this land since 1851, but only started bottling under their own name in 1990, when Laurent Charvin took over. Before that, the fruit went to négociants to be blended into other wineries' wine. This is an honest, well-made red for a weeknight dinner or anywhere you'd reach for a Grenache-based blend without wanting to spend Châteauneuf money.
What it tastes like
Red fruit and dried herbs lead, with a savoury note running through the middle. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with soft, well-integrated tannins and real freshness - a lighter, earlier-drinking cousin of the Domaine's Châteauneuf, built for drinking now rather than the cellar.

Who makes it
Domaine Charvin has farmed the same ground on the northern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1851, six generations of the same family, though it only began bottling and selling wine under its own name in 1990 under Laurent Charvin. The domaine farms organically, ferments with 100% whole clusters and ages in concrete vats without fining or filtration - the same traditional approach used across the range, whether for the Côtes du Rhône or the more expensive Châteauneuf it sits beside.
About the vintage
The Southern Rhône's 2024 growing season opened with a cold winter and an unusually warm spring, which brought bud burst around ten days earlier than 2023. Heavy spring rain refilled the soil but also brought serious mildew pressure, and a poor fruit set hit Grenache hardest, cutting yields before summer even started.
A dry, hot spell through late July and August then concentrated what fruit remained, and some welcome September rain ahead of harvest kept alcohol levels in check. Vincent Avril of Clos des Papes summed up the mood in the region: "We narrowly escaped the worst in 2024; 2018 taught us a great deal." Many Southern Rhône producers leaned more on Syrah and Mourvèdre than usual this year, simply because there was less Grenache to work with.
Despite the smaller crop, quality across the region is being talked about as genuinely strong: good colour, fine tannins and real freshness, with more concentration than the lower yields might suggest. It's a vintage that rewards the growers who got their timing right, and the wines coming out of it read as elegant and aromatic rather than diluted.
When to drink it
This is built for drinking within its first three to five years rather than long cellaring - it's the domaine's earlier-drinking wine by design. It will also open up nicely with half an hour of air if you're having it sooner rather than later.
